About Us:
Whether you're new to Rock Climbing & Mountaineering or looking for your next hit of adventure, SUMC is the club for you! Salford University Mountaineering Club (SUMC) is the most adventurous sports clubs at the university. We take part in a wide range of disciplines including bouldering, rope climbing, outdoor climbing, hiking and scrambling. Casual Rockover sessions, training, outdoor trips, and weekly socials are just part of what we offer to our members. We welcome all abilities, from complete beginners to seasoned alpinists, and love to help members improve their skills and gain confidence. We look forward to meeting you!!
Membership for the year costs only £50 which includes access to all our climbing meets, socials, trips, and everything else we do! And for only £25 more, a SUMC t-shirt is included.
Don’t worry if you have none of the kit! Included in your membership is a wide range of rope climbing essentials such as ropes, harnesses, helmets, trad kit and much more.

REGULAR MEET UPS:
As a club we have the following weekly meet ups:
• Bouldering at Rockover Climbing every Wednesday @ 2-5pm
• Weekly rope climbing sessions
• Wednesday evening socials
• Weekend hikes/climbs
• Our members also regularly attend various other climbing venues indoors and out so there is always something going on
LEARN TO SESSIONS:
Whether you are a complete beginner or just want to improve your skills then SUMC is the place to be. We will host weekly/biweekly rope climbing sessions at local centres aimed at teaching rope climb basics and expanding your knowledge and skills around rope climbing. At all our sessions committee and experienced club members will be on hand to help improve your climbing skills and you’ll be surprised at how quickly you will progress.
TRIPS:
We host regular trips around the UK throughout the academic year, such as a Freshers trip and winter trip that often takes place in Wales! We also do bimonthly day trips for either hiking or climbing to amazing locations like Wales, the Lake District and the Peak District. To finish off the year we jet off on a weeklong climbing/activity trip abroad, recent trips have visited Spain and the South of France!
SOCIALS:
SUMC is about more than just climbing – We run weekly socials on Wednesday aimed at bringing our members together as we’re a friendly bunch! Some examples include:
• Themed socials
• Activity based socials
• Big socials with other sports clubs, organised by the SU
