When you’re feeling snowed under, and your workload and life circumstances are getting to you, you’ll probably get a LOT of generic advice, that (chances are), you’ve probably tried already.
As much as breathing exercises, going for a run, and talking it out with a mate are good ways to relieve stress, I’ve got 5 alternative ways to destress, that you (might) not have thought of yet!
1. Swim in the waters of a Sound Bath…
Ever dreamt of being embraced by a warm hug… of sound? I get that this might sound a bit left field, but you might be surprised at how soothing a sound bath can be...
The vibrations and frequencies produced by singing gongs, bowls and chimes promote relaxation by slowing down brain waves and lowering cortisol levels (the hormone that causes stress). You’ll leave with a quietened mind, and relief from some of that exam and life stress.
Plus, the bonus of being close to a big city means they are popping up all over town. Give it a go!
2. Give Volunteer Pet-Sitting a go!
One of the hardest things about moving to university, especially from far away, can be missing your pets...
Studies consistently show that having pets in your life can significantly reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being. Playing, petting and interacting with pets triggers the release of oxytocin, the hormone that promotes feelings of relaxation and bonding.
But don’t despair… I have the next best thing: volunteer pet sitting/walking!
With all the benefits of getting some quality time with furry friends, without the commitment (sounds pretty ideal, if you ask me). Apps like Rover can be the perfect way to get involved, or put out a feeler in some local Facebook groups!
3. Embrace your inner Zen and try Reiki!
If you’re feeling tense, this ancient Japanese technique is believed to activate the body’s natural healing processes and promote a deep sense of relaxation, perfect for relieving stress during deadline season...
Reiki is all about balancing the bodily energy through gentle touch or hovering hands, putting you in a meditative state. It also works to lower blood pressure and generally improve health and wellbeing, so definitely worth considering when you’re in a slump.
4. Daydream away with a good old Colouring Book…
Fully switching off can be difficult for us all. When tasks use a lot of brain power during the working day, the last thing you want to do when you get home is think! I get it.
Committing to acquiring AND finishing a colouring book can be a challenge but is a great way to switch off, and also get a sense of fulfillment when you have the finished piece...
Colouring is therapeutic because the brain enters a meditative-like state, switching from a fight or flight response to a more restful state by engaging the parasympathetic nervous system. It’s worth a try if you ask me!
5. Why not Invest in Aromatherapy?
Candles are an essential part of room decor (whether the landlord knows about them or not), but did you know that investing in aromatherapy in your room can actually impact your stress levels?
Basically, aromatherapy reduces stress by using essential oils to stimulate the olfactory system, which is directly connected to the brain’s limbic system—the area responsible for emotions, memory, and behavior. When inhaled, the molecules from these oils trigger responses in the limbic system that help regulate mood and calm the nervous system.
In other words - the nice smells make you feel more happy!
You can pick up a diffuser from most homeware stores or online and purchase essential oils like lavender, camomile and sandalwood to specifically target stress. Try it!
Don’t let the Sunday scaries get you down! Equipped with this list of (very) alternative ways to destress, you have a few new ones to try if you haven’t already. Your mental health is important above all else so it’s time to prioritise it!
