Maybe your screen time is full of TikTok recipes and crochet tutorials. Maybe you're always recommending books your friends never get round to reading. Maybe your camera roll is 90% photos of sunsets, your dog or your lunch. Whatever you're into, there's a good chance someone at Salford is into it too.
University is one of the few places where you can try something new without needing years of experience or knowing anyone beforehand. Sometimes all it takes is turning up.
Creative Hobbies:
If your ideal afternoon is spent getting creative, take a look at Filming Society, Photographers Society, Zine & Print or the Creative Network. Whether you enjoy making videos, taking photos, designing graphics or writing, you'll meet people who love creating just as much as you do.
Gentle Hobbies:
If you're happiest with a controller in your hand or a book on your bedside table, you'll find your people too. Book Club, Gaming Society, Tabletop Gaming and Esports are all great places to connect over the hobbies you already enjoy.
Social Hobbies:
Looking to meet people from your course? Academic societies bring together students studying everything from Marketing and Psychology to Engineering, Architecture and Biomedical Science. They're a chance to share ideas, make connections and maybe even make assignment season feel a little less overwhelming.
Discovering Yourself:
For many students, finding people who share their culture, faith or lived experiences is just as important. Our cultural, faith and liberation societies provide welcoming spaces to celebrate your identity, meet new people and feel part of a community throughout your time at Salford.
Fitness Hobbies:
If you'd rather keep moving than sit still, Team Salford has something for every ability. From football, rugby and basketball to archery, fencing, scuba and pole fitness, there are plenty of opportunities to give something new a go, whether you're a complete beginner or already have experience.
The best part is that you don't have to choose just one!
Some students join a society because it links to their degree. Others join because they want to try something they've never done before. Sometimes you discover a new hobby. Sometimes you make friends you'll keep long after graduation. Most of the time, it's a bit of both.
The Welcome Fair is the best place to see what's on offer. Chat to current members, ask questions, sign up for a taster session and see what catches your eye. You might come looking for a society, but you could leave having found your community.
