An Introduction to Academic Representation
This area of the website is a dedicated space for Programme Leaders, Subject Leads and Directors to access all written guidance and recruitment resources needed for the current academic year. If there is anything further that you would like us to provide, please contact student-representation@salford.ac.uk.
How students lead change at Salford
For detailed information about the new Student Rep mechanisms, including the specific actions you will need to take as a Programme Leader or Subject Lead, please download the staff handbook at the bottom of the page. Below you can view our video covering the core principles of student representation at the University of Salford Student's Union:
Recruiting your Course Reps
When each programme starts, we need a volunteer from each year of each course to be registered to represent their cohort as a Course Rep.
Please promote the Course Rep role utilising the resources provided. The role of Course Rep provides fantastic social and personal development opportunities, so make sure to shout about these when calling on your cohort to select their representative.
In any instance where more than one student wants to represent their cohort, we recommend holding a vote to see which candidate has the consensus of their peers. If you as a Progamme Leader are happy to offer the opportunity to more than one rep, we allow you the discretion to do so long as multiple Course Reps work together to jointly represent their peers.
There is no strict deadline for Course Rep recruitment, but encourage you to do so within the first few weeks of a course commencing. If vacancies remain, please let our team know and we can assist in driving recruitment for your area. In all instances, Programme Leaders must register their Course Rep(s) directly via the form linked below:
Once your Course Rep(s) are registered, the Student-led Change team will reach out to each student directly inviting them to mandatory training. In due course, we will update your School with information regarding which registered Course Reps attended training. We then encourage Course Reps and Programme Leaders to meet every 4-6 weeks during term time to discuss any feedback relevant to their programme gathered from their cohort. This should result in actions that can be logged and tracked on PMEP.
January and May Course Rep Recruitment
If your programme's start date is in January or later in the year, please utilise the form linked above to register your reps. The Student-led Change team will continue to provide training and support to all Course Reps registered throughout the year.
Resources
For both Course Rep and School Rep recruitment, there are a variety of resources available. Notes are included on each slide so you can use them for live recruitment in lectures, or as a stand-alone resource on Blackboard.
