If you have an idea for a society that is not currently offered by the SU, you have come to the right place! The chances are that if you have an interest in something, there are others out there with the same interest.

Our student-led societies are designed to offer opportunities for their member and all Salford students; through putting on regular meetings, arranging workshops and exhibitions, planning trips and excursions, and much more! The Students' Union is here to help you get started, it is a very simple process and there is help every step of the way.

All of our societies are student-led. While staff, students from other institutions, and alumni can join societies, only current students at the University of Salford can start and run societies or sports clubs.

Once you submit your form you will be contacted by a SU staff member.

What are some of the benefits of affiliating a society/club to the SU?

  • Full-time staff support to help you put on your events, campaigns, and other activities.
  • Page on our website will all our other groups.
  • Free stall at our Welcome Fair (value £1500)
  • Access to funding
  • Promotion and marketing

How to Apply:

Applications for new student groups will only be accepted during designated application windows each academic year to ensure a streamlined and efficient approval process.

These windows will align with the Universities Welcome Week programs to allow new student groups to always begin their activities with an opportunity for growth. The deadlines established within these windows will have strict deadlines that both Student Groups and SU are accountable to.

These windows are designed to:

  • Provide a structured timeline for submitting and reviewing applications.
  • Allow the Student Union (SU) to dedicate appropriate resources to supporting new groups.
  • Ensure new groups can effectively integrate into the SU calendar and receive the necessary onboarding, training, and support.

Outside of these application windows, exceptions will only be considered for groups addressing urgent or significant emerging student needs, subject to SU approval.

Recognised new groups will gain access to SU resources, including funding opportunities, event promotion, and administrative support. Shape, Picture

What happens next?

Once the form has been submitted and the deadline has passed, a member of SU staff will reach out to you. We will review your application and get to work helping you create your new student group.

Running a society can be daunting at first, so we will put you through training to help you along. This includes finance, recruitment, events, marketing, and much more. You'll also meet with your coordinator for a development meeting once a semester to see how your society is coming along and if you need any extra help.

Once the society is up and running you will get a page on our website where members will be able to sign up, and we will do all we can to make sure your group has a successful launch event at one of our welcome weeks.

Most importantly enjoy your success!

You’ve done it! You have now created a new society from scratch – celebrate this at your first meeting and enjoy the rest of the year, it’s going to be great! Don’t forget we will be here for support whenever you need it - even if everything is going well we still want to hear from you so we can help promote your Society and any events you're planning!
