Elections are important, but what is more important is respect and kindness.
As many students will be aware, the Salford SU election results night on Friday did not include a result for the President position. This is because a formal complaint has been made against a candidate for President, and this complaint is still being processed. A full and fair investigation, including any appeals that may arise, must be completed before the results can be announced.
The Complaints and Appeals Process
All complaints are reviewed thoroughly to ensure fairness and integrity in the election process. If a decision by the Deputy Returning Officers (DROs) is appealed, it is then reviewed by the Returning Officer (RO), who is an independent member of staff from the National Union of Students (NUS).
The NUS is an impartial body that serves as the Returning Officer for many students’ unions across the country. Any appeal submitted is carefully considered by NUS to ensure a fair outcome. There is no fixed timeline for their decision, as it is essential that they reach the correct conclusion. More details on this process can be found in our Candidate Guide.
Respecting the Complaints Process & Preventing Victimisation
It is important to emphasise that all students and candidates have the right to raise concerns about issues or behaviours they find problematic. The ability to make a complaint is a fundamental part of ensuring a fair election.
Any negative actions taken against complainants—such as intimidation, harassment, or targeted backlash—are unacceptable and are considered victimisation. This will not be tolerated.
Speculation & Misinformation
We strongly urge all students to avoid spreading speculation, misinformation, or rumours regarding this complaint. Public discussion of an ongoing complaint can compromise the integrity of the process and contribute to an unhelpful and potentially harmful environment. Please particularly consider sharing any comments on social media, including WhatsApp.
Please be Respectful & Kind
While elections are important, what is even more important is the way we treat each other as a student community. No interest in election results can justify bullying, harassment, or any form of intimidation.
Any complaints of victimisation, bullying, or harassment will be taken very seriously and investigated under the SU Member Code of Conduct.
We ask all students to support a fair, respectful, and safe environment for everyone involved in this process.
Thank you for your patience and co-operation.
