Our student officers have been hard at work to improve YOUR student life, check out some of the things they have been working on!

Training for You!

In preparation for the academic year, our officers had an induction and training over the summer to get the skills to become an effective student-centred officer for you. Since then, they have continued to develop their skills through different seminars such as:

  • Community Organising Community of Practice in Birmingham, organised by the SU
  • Divestment, Reinvestment and Ethical Finance Training in Glasgow, organised by Students Organising for Sustainability
  • GDP: Student Governor Training in London with expert guidance from Jim Dickinson (Wonkhe)

These experiences have helped your officers to undestand how best to represent your needs and influence positive outcomes.

Lanyards & Bus Access: Sorted

Student feedback after Welcome Week indicated two main changes that were affecting your day-to-day experience: the lack of university lanyards and the end of free travel to Media City after 9:30pm.

We are glad to report, that these have been taken into account and addressed by your officers alongside the University Leadership Team. A special thanks to Professor Carol Evans (PVC Education and Student Experience) for working with the team to explore solutions quickly.

The changes are as follow:

  • Lanyards will be issued to all students - Schools have started emailing students with collection details, and soon all new starters will have their branded University of Salford Lanyard.
  • The free 50 bus will now run until 10:30pm  - This change matches Media City campus closing times, ensuring accessibility and safety for all of our students.

Bathroom & Accessibility Projects

After a successful Padlet link with 24 responses in the first 24 hours, student concerns were raised to our student officers.

One of the most prevalent issues was the access to bidets on campus, that especially affect out Muslim students, students with medical needs, and others who require or prefer water-based hygiene.

In response to this, our officers have contacted the Services & Estates and Faith Centre teams to discuss how this is something that needs to be addressed for the sake of our wider community.

This and the other concerns brought forward in the padlet link are being taken seriously and looked into by our student officer team to improve your university experience.

Cross-Course Connections

Another aspect that student officers have been focusing in this term, has been improving the SU present at both the Media City and Crescent House campuses, ensuring a better connection for SAMCT students.

This has been reflected by the Students’ Union pop-ups during Welcome Week and International Welcome Week at MCUK.

And moving forward, the team are working on cross-collaboration module programmes within SAMCT to help students build stronger portfolios and industry-ready skills.

New Events Incoming your Way

Our Student officers are working and planning on developing a diverse range of events for you to attend!

These include:

  • A student-led awareness on neurodiversity, aimed at fostering inclusion, empathy, and peer support
  • Highlighting Islamophobia awareness month
  • A celebratory event focused on women across cultures and faith in collaboration with our women VO

Let Us Know!

All these changes have happened because of you! Your constant feedback and concerns help our student officers to know how to improve your university experience so remain interacting with our channels to make this experience the best one possible!
