Let’s be honest, Manchester sunshine doesn’t stick around for long, so when it shows up you have to make the most of it. The good news? You don’t need to spend loads to enjoy a great day out. Here are some of the best ways to soak up the sun without draining your student budget.

Try a Wellbeing Gardening Session

Looking for something a bit different this summer? Salford SU and the University Wellbeing Team are teaming up with RHS Garden Bridgewater to run weekly wellbeing gardening sessions throughout June.

You’ll get the chance to help gardens bloom while taking part in relaxing activities like sowing seeds, planting crops, watering, and even harvesting fruits and herbs. It’s a great way to switch off, enjoy the sunshine, and try something hands-on.

Even better, transport and free entry to RHS Bridgewater are included for two of the sessions. For the other sessions, you’ll help develop the University’s brand new Wellbeing Garden, so you’re leaving your mark on campus too.

The sessions run every Friday in June and are supported by friendly student SU Connectors, so it’s also a great way to meet new people in a relaxed environment.

Note: Signing up is an expression of interest and doesn’t guarantee a place.

Picnic in the Park

A classic for a reason and it’s super cheap. Grab some snacks from Aldi or Lidl, round up your friends, and head to Peel Park for a chilled afternoon by the river. If you fancy a bigger day out, Heaton Park has loads of space for games, sunbathing, or just relaxing with music.

Walk the Canals

Manchester’s canals are perfect for a sunny stroll and completely free. Wander through Castlefield and explore the historic waterways, or just walk aimlessly with a podcast on. It’s simple, but surprisingly refreshing.

Study (or Pretend To) Outside

Got deadlines? Take your work outdoors. Whether it’s a park bench or a patch of grass, studying in the sun instantly feels less painful. Spots like Fletcher Moss Botanical Garden are great if you want somewhere quieter and more scenic.

Grab a Sweet Treat

You don’t need a full meal out, sometimes a small treat does the job. Pick up an iced coffee or ice cream and enjoy it outside. Places like Takk or Ezra & Gil are great for a one-off treat without going overboard.

Free Events & Pop-Ups

In summer, Manchester is full of free things to do. There are outdoor performances, markets, and pop-up events. Keep an eye out for what’s happening around the city, especially during things like Manchester International Festival, where you can often find free or low-cost activities.

Cycle Instead of Paying for Transport

Skip the bus and save money by cycling. The Bee Network bike hire scheme is a cheap way to get around while enjoying the sunshine and it doubles as exercise.

Catch a Free Sunset

End the day with one of the easiest (and best) activities: watching the sunset. Find a good spot along the canals or open spaces and just take it in. It costs nothing but feels like a proper summer moment.

Final Tip

You don’t need big plans or lots of money to enjoy summer in Manchester. A bit of sun, some good company, and a cheap snack can go a long way.
